Vibration can be caused by a bent shank, an incorrectly inserted bit, a dirty chuck, excessive speed or a handpiece that needs servicing. Stop the device, inspect the shank visually and reinsert the bit correctly. Do not use a bent bit: it may damage the handpiece and make your work imprecise.

These are three separate stages: cleaning removes visible residue, disinfection reduces microorganisms, and sterilisation follows a validated protocol for compatible equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the product’s concentrations and contact times, then dry the instruments completely. No. An ultrasonic cleaner makes cleaning easier by loosening residue in hard-to-reach areas, but it does not replace disinfection or sterilisation. After the cycle, rinse if required by the product protocol, dry thoroughly, then continue with the steps suited to the material and the manufacturer’s instructions.

No. Autoclave compatibility depends on the material, coating and manufacturer’s instructions. Some professional steel instruments or bits are designed for sterilisation, while others may be damaged. Always consult the product page or instructions and never autoclave an accessory that is not identified as compatible.

After suitable cleaning and treatment, dry the bits completely to prevent corrosion and deposits. Store them in a clean, dry, closed holder, clearly separating treated equipment from used equipment. If your protocol includes sterilisation in pouches, keep the packaging intact until use and observe its validity period.

Above all, assess the torque, stability at working speed, handpiece comfort, vibration, noise, direction of rotation and availability of after-sales support. Maximum speed alone is not enough. Speed is the number of revolutions per minute. Torque is the machine’s ability to maintain rotation when it meets resistance. A nail drill may advertise a high speed yet slow under load if its torque is low. For consistent, comfortable work, look for a balance between speed, torque and handpiece quality.

A good-quality 30,000 rpm nail drill covers many manicure services. A model capable of 40,000 or 50,000 rpm can offer more reserve power, but this does not mean that you should work at its maximum speed. Torque, stability, vibration and control of your technique remain more important than the highest number.

A good handpiece is well balanced, sits naturally in the hand and remains stable without excessive vibration. Its locking system must hold the bit securely. A slight rise in temperature may occur during use, but significant heat, a new noise or persistent vibration means you should stop and check the equipment.

Switch off and unplug the nail drill before maintenance.
